About the National Safety Council
The National Safety Council is a nonprofit, nongovernmental public service organization dedicated to protecting life and promoting health. The National Safety Council is a member organization founded in 1913 and granted a congressional charter in 1953. NSC members include over 55,000 businesses, labor organizations, schools, public agencies, private groups and individuals.
The National Safety Council saves lives by preventing injuries and deaths at work, in homes and communities and on the roads through leadership, research, education and advocacy. The NSC focuses on the areas where the greatest numbers of preventable injuries and deaths occur: workplace safety, teen driving, cell phone use while driving, and safety in homes and communities.
Traffic safety and defensive driving education are important areas of focus for the NSC because motor vehicle crashes are the leading cause of unintentional injury deaths with teen drivers affected disproportionally. The NSC is successfully advocating for graduated licensing requirements and limits on cell phone use and bans on texting while driving. NSC defensive driving programs have trained over 75 million drivers since 1964.
